Bible Alive in Dunfermline and Lochgelly
by Aileen Christie
“Fantastic mix of activities to keep the class engaged at all time”
“Delivered in a way I simply could not have done”
“I have learned a lot about God and the bible. I wouldn’t have known this if yous didn’t come in”
These comments are from teachers and children who have recently participated in Bible Alive, a Scripture Union initiative we delivered to Primary 6s in Fife taking them through the whole Bible in 7 one-hour sessions using drama, sign language, storytelling, video clips and lots more.
Fiona MacKenzie from Dunfermline St Leonard’s and Aileen Christie Outreach Worker at St Serf’s Lochgelly Benarty met up at training and worked together to source and assemble the props, draft scripts and create PowerPoints before delivering the programme in St Leonard’s and Lochgelly South and West Primaries. We have now completed our second year and Bible Alive has become embedded in the school plans.
We already had a relationship with each of the schools and they were very open to inviting us in to do Bible Alive. Feedback from the young people and teachers, was very positive. They seemed glad to see us each time and loved to participate. We were amazed at how much they took in from the fast-paced delivery and also at some of the really thought-provoking questions asked. The children (and their teachers!) now know far more about the Bible than most and have a basic understanding of what Christians believe and a foundation from which to consider a faith of their own at some point.
Bible Alive has also assisted us to strengthen our relationships with the schools. We now have reading Grannies in one of the schools and have worked with another to create intergenerational activities at a Community Lunch and a Warm Space. The children recognize us out and about and are always keen to engage with us when they see us around school.
We would encourage you to consider doing Bible Alive Training – it is challenging but a lot of fun and really equips you to deliver the programme with confidence. It’s a great way to develop relationships with schools and to serve them by helping them deliver a part of the curriculum teachers often struggle with.
