Physical Education for the unwilling!

There will always be teenagers who would rather avoid PE and will often forget their PE kit.  There may also be young people in your local school with an unhealthy relationship with food and exercise.  Why not consider serving the pupils and school by getting alongside them and helping?  There are a few ways you could do this:

  • You could go walking or do a preferred ‘active’ activity with those who refuse to take part in classes or forget their kits. (NB: Depending on how well this goes, it may become an activity where pupils have to remember their PE kit otherwise if they prefer your activity to the original class on offer they will ‘forget’ their kit thus defeating the purpose).

  • Build up relationships with the staff by hanging out in the PE staff base (when invited?!) for a cup of tea after a session or consider dropping off some home baking – the PE staff enjoy that as much as everyone else!

  • You could offer to work with a group of pupils as part of a healthy eating/living project.

Perhaps your church is in a position to support local primary and secondary schools by supplying gym shoes and/or kit as resources permit.

How could you start this yourself?

  • Get in touch with local chaplains and then senior management team at your local schools to find out if there are needs that you could help meet.
